Branch Championships 2024 Age Pointscore: 300 (2nd) Date: 3 & 4 February 2024 Location: North Bondi SLSC Last weekend our Coogee Bluey's were given the opportunity to take a trip down to Corrimal SLSC and had a blast!
We thoroughly enjoyed the bus ride down, ten pin bowling, dinner, games of touch football in the park, hanging with friends, watching Avatar and then sleeping in the clubhouse on Saturday before patrol on Sunday. With a contingent of 27 young people and 6 supporting adults, we patrolled from 9am to 6pm on the beach. In Corrimal's completely different beach conditions and patrol setup to Coogee, our young people took turns patrolling from the water, sand, IRB and ATV. This involved plenty of paddling, bogey boarding, bodysurfing, swimming, crewing in the IRB, education from the sand as well as some delicious lunch, dinner & snack breaks (supplied generously by Chish and Fips). All this was achieved whilst keeping the beach safe and supporting a struggling small club. It was an excellent weekend of lifesaving and fun, and everyone involved is already looking forward to another trip like it! Please read the 2023 UNSW Annual Water Safety Report here.
A message from the UNSW Health Promotion team: As we approach the end of the year, it is with great pleasure that we share our newly released Annual Water Safety Report for 2023. This report encapsulates the milestones, achievements, and impact we've made in enhancing water safety and we are excited to present it all of our valued stakeholders. Please share widely within your organisations and with any who might be interested. Your unwavering support and dedication have played a crucial role in our success, and we want to express our sincere gratitude. Together, we've created ripples of positive change in fostering a culture of water safety, particularly among international students and culturally diverse communities. As we reflect on the past year, we look forward to continuing this journey with you. Your collaboration is instrumental in our mission to break down barriers, empower individuals, and make our waters safer for everyone. Thankyou for being an integral part of our water safety community. Here's to another year of impactful collaboration! Happy Holidays and a have a great rest of the year! Last Saturday, Sydney Branch held their yearly assessment for the Gold Medallion, and 8 members from Coogee successfully completed it with flying colours. Coogee had the highest number of representatives sitting the award across branch and would like to thank George Fatseas for selflessly sacrificing 4 mornings every week to train the group year-round - an absolutely legendary commitment. A special mention to Craig Howie who helped assessed 20 candidates in 40 degree heat.
The President’s Cup was held on Sunday 3rd December at the Southern End of Coogee beach. Once again, we had a tremendous turnout of our members who clearly enjoy the team format. Members were randomly placed into teams of 6 to compete in a variety of events including a beach sprint relay, handicapped swim and teams’ swim. Teams accumulated points across the 3 events to go towards an overall point score to determine a winner.
Last Saturday 4th November was our first hosting of the beach-only event called Beach Stormers. Events comprised of distance runs, beach sprints and beach flags.
With 140 registered competitors, some coming from as far south as Wollongong and as far north as Coffs Harbour, with many from the Sydney metro beach clubs. Greetings! Let me firstly wish all new and returning members a warm welcome to Season 2023/2024 at Coogee SLSC.
