Coogee Blueys

Picture
The “Coogee Blueys” are our U15-U18’s within Coogee SLSC, and are a very important part of ongoing development of the Youth within the club. Many of the members within this age group have come from the “Coogee Minnows”, the Nippers of Coogee SLSC.
As with many SLS Nipper clubs, Coogee Minnows has a good structure, well known within the club and the local community, and has a solid identity for the kids to belong to.

It is of vital importance for the future of our surf lifesaving clubs that we encourage Nippers to stay and remain engaged within lifesaving once they graduate. Many have been at the club for nine years and bring solid lifesaving and surf skills along with a good understanding of the Club’s local beach.

At Coogee our SRC groups are significantly increasing each year and in an effort to assist with retention a decision was made in early 2010 to give the U15-18’s their own identity/group within the Coogee SLSC so they can transition from Nippers to the senior Club whilst still remaining part of a defined group by joining the “Blueys”. Via this “Brand”, they run their own events and participate in competition, whilst being part of the wider club arena. For those that wish to take their Lifesaving to advanced levels, the “Blueys” can join the Coogee SLSC Academy and progress from the SRC through the Bronze Medallion to higher Awards up to the Gold Medallion as a group. They will also have the opportunity to participate in leadership via education roles.

The Blueys Committee is run by our Junior Captain - Ruby Thomasyu, and this team reports to our Club Mgt team.

Lifesaving
The “Blueys” are encouraged to gain their Bronze Medallion and higher Awards as a team via the Coogee SLSC Academy or in the standard way. The Coogee SLSC Academy consists of two groups – the “Cadets” (pre-Bronze Medallion) and the “Juniors” (post-Bronze Medallion). Entry to the Cadets is open to all Coogee Minnows SRC graduates from the most recent two SRC groups. Application for the Juniors will be invited from the most recent Cadet group.

The Coogee SLSC Academy meet every Sunday morning 7:30-8:30am during Minnows and train together and undertake their higher awards as a group. As part of the Coogee SLSC Academy, the Cadets also undertake rotation of various activities available in the Club, to encourage them to stay engaged after they have attained their Bronze Medallion and also improve their awareness of the various pathways that can be taken in the Club including competition, leadership and education.

The “Blueys” are also offered a mentoring program, and participate in lifesaving competition, visit other club patrols and gain experience in Support Operations.
Competition
U15-U17’s compete under the Blueys/Coogee SLSC banner within the club and external carnivals across all disciplines.
Leadership and Development
Coogee SLSC has a focus on developing the whole person and with this in mind we offer sessions to the Blueys that teach and present subjects that assist there growth as a teenager

Many of our Blueys also participate in SLS Development Programs delivered by Sydney Branch and SLSNSW

Graduating Nippers once they are awarded their SRC, are then welcomed to the “Blueys” and then become part of the next stage of their Surf Lifesaving journey at Coogee SLSC.
