Coogee Blueys
The Coogee Blueys are our Youth Group (U15-U18’s) within Coogee SLSC. Many of our Blueys members have come from the Coogee Minnows, the Nippers of Coogee SLSC. Coogee Blueys are a very important part of the ongoing developmental pathways within Coogee SLSC.
It is of vital importance for the future of our Surf Lifesaving Clubs that we encourage Nippers to stay and remain engaged within Surf Lifesaving once they graduate. Many have been at the Club for nine seasons. and bring solid lifesaving and surf skills, along with a good understanding of the Club’s local beach and connection to community. The lifesaving journey continues as young adults with many different pathways available to choose from. These include becoming part of the leadership team on patrol; education training officers, and potential Australian gold medalists in the Surf sports arena, as well as enjoying the social life that Surf Clubs offer our local youth. Since 2010, Coogee youth have had their own identity within the Coogee SLSC, as they transition from Nippers to the Senior Club, remaining part of a defined group by joining the Coogee Blueys. Via the “Blueys” the youth run their own social events, participate in competition, complete lifesaving training courses and all whilst being part and mentored by the wider club arena. Blueys can progress from their Surf Life Saving Certificate through to the Bronze Medallion and higher Awards such as Advanced Resuscitation Techniques, Silver and Gold Medallion and IRB crew and driver as a group. They will also have the opportunity to participate in Youth leadership development camps offered by Branch, State and Surf Life Saving Australia. The Blueys Committee is run by our Junior Captain Cate Kyling, under the mentorship of the Director of Youth Services, Ruby Thomasyu. The Junior Captain attends the Lifesaving Management meetings monthly and the Director of Youth Services attends the Monthly Management Meeting of the Coogee Club. The “Blueys” are encouraged to gain their Bronze Medallion and higher Awards as a team via the Coogee SLSC Academy or in the standard way. The Coogee SLSC Academy consists of two groups – the “Cadets” (pre-Bronze Medallion) and the “Juniors” (post-Bronze Medallion). Entry to the Cadets is open to all Coogee Minnows SRC graduates from the most recent two SRC groups. Application for the Juniors will be invited from the most recent Cadet group.
The Coogee SLSC Academy meet every Sunday morning 7:30-8:30am during Minnows and train together and undertake their higher awards as a group. As part of the Coogee SLSC Academy, the Cadets also undertake rotation of various activities available in the Club, to encourage them to stay engaged after they have attained their Bronze Medallion and also improve their awareness of the various pathways that can be taken in the Club including competition, leadership and education. The “Blueys” are also offered a mentoring program, and participate in lifesaving competition, visit other club patrols and gain experience in Support Operations. Within the Lifesaving arena, there are a number of great opportunities for our Blueys via the Surf Lifesaving Pathways Program. Click on the button below for more information.
