The President’s Cup was held on Sunday 3rd December at the Southern End of Coogee beach. Once again, we had a tremendous turnout of our members who clearly enjoy the team format. Members were randomly placed into teams of 6 to compete in a variety of events including a beach sprint relay, handicapped swim and teams’ swim. Teams accumulated points across the 3 events to go towards an overall point score to determine a winner. We had four teams compete across each of the legs, with ages varying from U/13 up to and including some of our masters. The first event involved the beach sprint relay with teams aiming to gain an early advantage. We saw the lead change several times with some people slipping over and some of our better sprinters motoring through the field. It was team two who won the beach relay lead by the veteran Tony Sheppard.
The next event was the handicapped swim, with two team members selected from each team. Swimmers were confronted with clean, offshore conditions as they entered the water. The pack come together towards the final stage of the swim, which made for an intriguing finish. Once again, we had team two come out on top. With a sizable advantage for team two going into the final leg of the swim teams it was always going to be difficult to catch them. Each team had four competitors tasked with competing in the swim. The only challenge for overall honours came from team one, lead by Nicola Logan. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be their day and team two did enough with a third in the final leg which secured the overall victory. Can I thank everyone for their involvement on the day, along with those who assisted in running the event. It was a great morning with everyone getting behind their teams and supporting one another. These club events continue to go from strength to strength and I look forward to seeing many more members participating in the future. TEAM TWO WINNERS:
