A small board riding team from Coogee represented the club two weekends ago up at Merewether beach for the 2022 State Surfboard Riding Championships. The team consisted of a small number of groms including Angus Folsom, George Messiter, Lachie Hume, Will Waugh and Finn Wilkie, as well as Joey Mison competing for Era.
Kicking off the day Lachie Hume surfed in the U14/15s Male Shortboard event. With not much time to suss out the conditions the boys were straight out onto the second bank getting right handers just right of the surf club. These kids whilst still young were no mere novices in the water taking off on 3ft to 4fters in front of the rocks like it was their local break. Lachie squeezed in two waves back-to-back before the bell but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to make it through. A very tough competition even coming up against a sponsored surfer, a good effort from Lach. Following up, the U13’s with George and Gus both making it through to the final Gus even winning his heat against four other surfers! George and Gus in the final battling it out against the four other finalists they surf on the main bank out front. With the main bank shutting down a lot more than the secondary bank it was all about wave selection. George picking off the good ones took out the Gold for Coogee, Gussie just missing a medal with some tough scores from the judges but great surfing from both the boys nonetheless. For the rest of the boys, Will, Finn and Joe competed later in the day in the U17s/U19s heats. All the boys surfing extremely well all making it to the semi’s but only Wilkie scraping through to final. The final was neck and neck between Finn and his rival from North Cronulla to win the Gold but Finn ultimately came out on top and took home the win for Coogee! Joe Mison went on to compete up an age group in the Opens and also scored a Gold bringing that one down the hill for Era! A truly impressive day of surfing from all the crew and big thanks to all the support from the people there on the day as well as the crew back home following the event throughout the day. See you out in the surf. Yew!
