On Tuesday 22nd October, four Surf Lifesavers from Sydney Branch attended the NSW Premiers Community BBQ to welcome his Majesty King Charles III (SLSA Patron) and Queen Camilla. Aimee Charles, Callum Hawkins and Sarah Flynn from Coogee SLSC, and Ben Sutton from Wanda SLSC attended on behalf of SLSNSW, and fired up the BBQ for the Royal couple. Here’s what Callum had to say:
It was a fantastic opportunity to represent Surf Lifesaving at one of this year’s biggest community events. We were all thrilled and very excited to meet the King and Queen during their time in Sydney. The motorcade arrived and King Charles and Queen Camilla came around to the SLS stand and the barbecue. We had a five minute talk with the King and Queen, and touched base on how the patrolling season has commenced, our new drone fleet and invited him for a swim at Coogee beach. He was really cheerful and told us about his affiliation with Surf Lifesaving over the decades. SLSNSW President Peter Agnew presented King Charles with a framed Red and Yellow Quarter Cap to take home to the UK. We then took them over to the Webber Barbecues to flip the sausages, and they demonstrated their technique in handling an Aussie BBQ and we all had some good laughs together. Throughout the day we also met Olympians, Politicians and other Emergency Services representatives. It was a great day out with lots of support for SLS, some good BBQ food, lots of smiles, and an honour to meet the King and Queen representing Coogee and SLSNSW.
