2012 Branch Titles, Wanda
The Branch Titles were held at Wanda on Saturday in good conditions. A warm day with a light breeze and a small swell. Coogee bagged a huge load of medals
While most of us are still in the way to the carnival our young surfboard riders were pushing the limits and found some success. Joey Michaels won the under 17s and young Sam Morgan came second in the under 14’s.
I watched our men’s reserve boat crew win the final in an exciting finish with three crews all on the same wave to the beach. Matt Leary held the wave straight as an arrow as did the two other crews but had his lads dig deepest in the final rally of strokes to win by a decisive yet close margin.
Every rower and sweep performed so well on the weekend. It was great to have the 5 crews on the beach getting in and helping each other. The extra support was the catalyst for our very good results. Also thanks to all the families who cheered wildly from the sideline!
The boat results speak for themselves. Read more about it in Matt's wrap-up.
On the beach, Hugh Millar had to win his race twice as the judges could not pick the minor medals in the under 17 sprint. Hugh was well clear in both finals with Ben Morgan unlucky to not get a gong as he was at least third in the first race only to be told of the re-run. Ben could not back up his earlier run and missed the placing the second time round. Bad luck Ben but a good run nevertheless.
In the open race James Moran finished second. I’ve got to mention Beau Docking in this race with a third place. This is a great run by Beau who gained this result largely due to his capacity for hard work at training all year. Michael Denny Smith and Rory Docking were 5th and 6th in the open final.
The under 17 relay teams picked up 1st and 3rd places in the boys race and 2nd in the girls race and our open men’s team was 2nd also. Shea Collings won the Open flags with Alex Peterson 3rd. Alex later came second in the U17 flags and Joey Michael was 3rd. Under 14 flagger, Luke Bond came 3rd in the Under 15 boys event. Great work Luke!
Our masters competitors were everywhere on the day. Nicola Logan won her surf race and sprint. Linda Walsh also won her sprint In fact it was 1,2,3 with Sharon deans and Sarah in the same race. Phil Petit did the quadruple….surf, board, iron woman and sprint…...that’s 1,1,1,1 in her age group. What an effort Phil. Phew!! Linda Walsh later picked up 3rd in the flags as did John McDonald. And our ladies masters beach relay teams, with only the one age event, finished first and second in a packed field. Well done ladies and congrats to their relay coach, Beau Docking. There were way too many winners and grinners in the Masters. You will have to look at the full results below.

Way up the other end of the beach our young boardies were having a go at it. Jamie Bargenda finished 6th in the final of the under 17 board race and came 5th with Ben Thornton in the board rescue. Ben Thornton won his surf race, was 2nd in the iron man and 12th in the board. Clayton Cantarella paddled in the u15 board and board relay finals.
Earlier in the day Rona Macniven came 2nd in her open 2K and Ben Thornton also picked up 2nd in his 2K beach race.
In the R&R events. The open mixed team grabbed gold. The open ladies 3rd. The U17 boys did well again for 2nd in the open 5 man event and our under 10-12 2 person teams got 2nd (Sam Gately & Kelly Callaghan) and 5th (Grace McDonald & Lucy Tate).
